A much loved Sunday of walks, teaching, fellowship and dancing on the beach.
I woke up this morning thinking about how yesterday, Sunday, August 10th, was National Lazy Day. Why on earth do we need a dedicated day to be lazy? Oh I know, it’s because some of us work too hard thinking our worth is tied to our output. I love the concept, and definitely took advantage of it but not in the way I’m sure it was designed. The day was anything besides what society would deem as lazy for me. What it was, was a day of play, exercise, work, fellowship and fried chicken. The most perfect “lazy” day for me!
“Do or do not, there is no try.” - Master Yoda
I drive around the city of LA often, so when a day, especially a Sunday, invites me to drive from North Hollywood, to Highland Park, to Hermosa Beach and back home, I will most likely say yes. There’s a pursuit of JOY here! The invitation will always invite a sense of wonder and delightful moments await. That is how I view life.
Nevertheless, I catch myself comparing my worth to my output and perhaps that’s why a dedicated day of laziness was put on the calendar because surely I’m not alone. Driving around the city the way I do to some seems far from lazy, and they’d be correct, still I wouldn’t have changed yesterday for anything. It was the perfect day! And any day that is perfect can be whatever you want it to be: lazy or active.
Your worth isn’t contingent on your ability to do its contingent on your will to believe.
Do you believe in yourself enough to make a day dedicated to more or less doing nothing and make it the best day of your life? It’s you, not anyone else, that has the power to make the day great and when you fall into the laziness of try, you are saying to yourself I’m not enough to have a day of wonder be great and conversely, I’m not enough to have a day of lazy aka rest as well.
I know I started this note with one of my favorite quotes, “do or do not, there is no try,” from Master Yoda and you were probably wondering the tie in for National Lazy Day, and here it is: fully commit to whatever you are doing no matter what people think or say. You want a day of lazy, full body and mind commit. Alternatively, if you want a day of action, commit to it fully so no matter where you land throughout the day, it’s on your terms.
We’ve become too passive as a society in either direction causing us to fall into a lazy trap disguised as “self-care.” It’s caused us to neglect our deepest desires and the will to fully commit to anything and that’s to our own detriment. Wild right!
If you’ve read this far, thank you, and my prayer for you is this: enjoy the day as it comes and let magic find you along the path. Or commit to a plan and see it through to the finish line and don’t try, do, it’s very simple for a reason — keep it that way!
With love,
Your favorite Ram
